At some point you are bound to get some blood on your carpet. Hopefully it as a result of something minor like a cut or nosebleed and not something more serious! Blood can be very difficult to remove, especially if it sets in. That’s why you want to act fast (assuming you don’t need to make a trip to the hospital first). In this guide we will be going over some steps to get a blood stain out of carpet.
Soak Up Excess
Using paper towels or an absorbent towel, blot up as much as you can, Make sure you start around the edges and work your way in as not to spread the blood to other areas of the carpet. If the blood is already dry, use a dull knife or brush to break it up. Be sure not to damage the carpet.
Hot vs. Cold Water
It is very important to note that you should use cold water to clean a blood spot and not hot water. Hot water could actually set the stain in which we definitely do not want to happen. Instead, try mixing up some cold water and ammonia. Add on teaspoon of ammonia to half a cup of water. You can also add a little bit of dish-washing detergent or some non-bleach laundry detergent to boost your mixed cleaning solution. Next, dip a white absorbent cloth or towel into your solution and start blotting the areas, being careful not to scrub too hard. Make sure you start around the edges first. Continue blotting and moving on to a clean area of cloth until you don’t see anymore of the blood.
Once you have removed all the blood, you want to get the area dry as quickly as possible. Use a towel to soak up as much moisture as you can, then put a fan on the spot to speed up the drying process. If after you have gone through these steps there is still some remaining staining, try misting on some 3% Hydrogen Peroxide on to the stain. The Hydrogen Peroxide should take care of the rest, but may need to be applied a few more times over the next couple of days.
